I saw you play at the Cornish Arms hotel earlier this year as I was invited by Luke Howard (Pianist) and I must say you blew me away with your Chapman Stick! I am a Genesis/Gabriel fan and did notice some of these Genre undertones in your music - I was in heaven! I also purchased one of your CD's "Bas by Al" and cant wait to get hold of more of you're music and a Stick, I too play guitar, do you know where I can find one in Australia?

Deine Musik mit Slava Grigoryan hört sich echt geil an.
Was mich als alter Level 42 Fan erstaunt ist, dass Du mit alten Original-members von denen arbeitest.
Ich hoffe, man sieht Euch auch mal in good old Germany (mit Mike Lindup und den Gould-brothers??), der Weg von Wien ist nicht so weit, aber von den Aussies schon.
Ich hoffe, man kann Euer Album "Continental Shift" in Deutschland kaufen.
Bei Deinen nächsten Projekten immer ein gutes Feeling für Deinen Bass (Mark "Thundertump" King schlägst Du nicht !!!) ;)) und persönlich alles Gute...

hallo alex, ich habe gerade deine site durchforscht und wollte nur mal D'Ehre sagen. Geile site, jetzt weiss ich auch endlich wieder was du so treibst!
Ich wusste gar nicht dass du in Oz lebst, ich bin auch immer wieder dort auf tour, daher: Wo in Oz wohnst du? Ich pendle zwischen London und Los Angeles, meine Frau ist aus L.A. und wir haben zwei Wohnorte-je nach Arbeit. Ich habe auch 2 Kinder! 2 boys, Zwillinge, anderthalb Jahre alt-..Schwitz!
Viel Arbeit und auch Stress ohne Ende. Ich verkaufe meine Huette in London und wir ziehen im Herbst permanent nach L.A., das Wetter hier ist so Kacke, da wird man ja dauernd nass...

Ok, well since it seems like no-one else wants to put a gig review up here (that isn't an official media kind of one), it looks like it's up to me! :-)
The gig concerned was on the 30th of March as part of the Continental Shift tour at Tilley's in Canberra. A gig at Tilleys is always a treat ... the atmosphere is good, the food always delicious and entertainment is second to none. And the fact that it was the boys playing meant that there was no way that it wasn't going to be a good night.
And it was. A nice blend of old and new, solo and dual performances (or should that be duel? ':-)). Slava came out first to treat us with what to my layperson's ears sounded like the classical equivalent to a megamix. I heard numerous phrases of familiar songs in there - Sounds of rain and perhaps Fandanguillo as well (that was the first song name that sprang to mind but I'm having my doubts now as to whether or not it actually was!). Then Al joined him onstage for a few tracks from the new album - Bedouin breakfast, Goodbye Vienna, and Time of my life. They finished off the first set with a dose of nostalgia in Freefall.
Then there was the second set. I swear, Al is too funny. He was announced twice, each time being applauded by the crowd to welcome him back onstage but he was a no show. Finally he emerged on stage with a sheepish grin and a wave to the crowd. He enthralled us with an extended version of Desperation which was just mindblowing. I'm sure he earned a few more fans with that piece. He is truly impressive. It is this performance that prompts Slava to suggest, when he rejoins Al on stage, that "if you liked that, you should hear him yodelling." The look on Al's face was priceless, as was his very shocked "what?" in reply.
The remainder of the second set is just as beautiful, encompassing Another night in London, Cruising, 2AM, Lullaby and Gusovitch, which was inspired by a musician friend of theirs named Gus who had invented a drink of that name (ie. named it after himself). I'm not sure what the drink is made with, but the song had a distinctively Middle Eastern flavour to it. The most pleasing part of the second set, for me at least, was a few phrases of Deve Ser Amor slipped into Gusovitch which instantly made me grin. It brought back memories of the first time I saw them play together, the way they duelled, raced one another, joyfully spurred one another onwards. That sort of rapport on stage and whilst performing is just so incredible. It always makes me feel privileged somehow to have witnessed something so special.
After much cheering and clapping, they return for one more song. Aptly, it is Farewell. As soon as I recognised the opening bars, I was transported back to a gig I went to at the Basement back in '99 where that song was also used to close the show. Some experiences are so special that the mark they leave cannot be erased by time or distance. This was yet another.
So, that was the show in a nutshell ... the only problem I have now is trying to put into words how amazing Al and Slava are together and how utterly enthralled I have found myself with the new CD. But, then again, if you're reading this, you probably already know. :-)
